Ah, Prohibition, that charming time when the jazz tempo was in line with the Thompsons' shooting rhythm, when speakeasies were blooming on every street corner, and when drinking was a fun activity... and illegal. So we put on our shoes with polished spikes of underworld baron and we go down together the highway towards the city of all the tricks: Chicago. Rather than opting for a linear approach, we find ourselves in a "Sandbox" type game in command of a mafia godfather selected from among the thirteen available: Al Capone, of course, but also Goldie Carneau or Angelo Genna. Your objective? To become the undisputed master of the Windy City.

Chicago is divided into several neighborhoods such as Fulton Market or Chinatown, so you are free to choose your approach, all in real-time. Unlike the classics of the genre such as Civilization, here, time flows constantly with the possibility of pausing. We start the adventure by seeing our hero, in the street, with cars driving and pedestrians strolling peacefully. If the modeling of the city does not tear the retina, the jazzy soundtrack that accompanies it gives it a real atmosphere. With a flick of the mouse, you are in the neighborhood view, which shows you in a relatively clear way which buildings you own, and which ones you could get. One more scroll and we find ourselves with a view of the whole of Chicago and the areas that make it up.

The management aspect is the great success of the title. Here, it is in the "Tycoon" series of games that we find references. Despite the trappings that hope to give it complexity, in the end, the core of the game is clear: make booze to sell it under the noses of law enforcement and your opponents. You have to manage two main resources: money and alcohol.

From our vision of the neighborhood, we will be able to identify the different buildings (empty or occupied) that make it up. We can then send our Godfather and his squad to raid the building and take it over, to open one of the businesses of our choice. In addition to the brewery and the speakeasy, it is possible to open a brothel (small profits, but small risks), a hotel (to bring more people in the equal, or even a casino.

Empire of Sin is a title full of ambition and goodwill. The mix of ideas that it proposes is always enough to make the little mafioso in us dream.
